Important Themes in Onboarding
Onboarding is a unique discipline that demands significant attention and should be prioritized for the benefit of both your new colleague and your organization. A poor or inadequate onboarding process can quickly lead to your new colleague leaving before you truly get started. This can be frustrating and disappointing for everyone in the organization, but especially for the hiring manager and close colleagues who must go through a new recruitment process. Therefore, it is crucial that every recruitment process is followed up with a professional onboarding.
You cannot choose not to have an onboarding process. But you can choose to have an extremely inadequate onboarding.

At TALENTON, our work is based on our onboarding model. With our onboarding model, you ensure that you cover themes that are important for employees when they start in their new roles. Our work is based on the themes of Compliance, Culture, Connection, Collaboration, Check-back, Competencies, and Clarification.
Compliance and Culture measure the employee’s sense of making a meaningful difference, identifying with the company, and feeling pride. By ensuring that your new colleagues understand the rules and culture in the workplace, you increase the likelihood that the employee finds meaning in the job. This is a crucial motivation for many people in their work today.
Connection and Collaboration measure professional and social relationships, including feeling respected, recognized, and connected. By helping and supporting your new colleagues in building both personal and professional relationships, you increase the likelihood that new hires develop good relationships, which are important to many people.
Check-back, Competencies, and Clarification measure the employee’s career, including influence on their own job, development opportunities, and the experience of contributing and performing. When you show interest in your new hires’ career and development aspirations, align expectations, and continuously help your new colleagues perform at their best, employees’ motivation to advance their careers with you often increases. This, in turn, increases the likelihood that they will stay with you.
What do your onboarding programs look like today? Does it need an update, and which themes are already incorporated into your onboarding programs? We recommend that all themes be included in onboarding new employees because all themes are essential for a good job start. Some themes naturally carry more weight than others. Likewise, onboarding programs can vary depending on individual employee needs and backgrounds. Many considerations come into play, such as education, work experience, job complexity, etc. – more on this another time.
